Podcast: Support for Student Veterans
Student success is at the core of California Community College real estate classes. We support the principles of the Vision for Success, to support improved outcomes for community college students. Commitment 3 of the Vision for Success is to “pair high expectations with high support.” Student veterans have unique strengths and challenges in your classrooms and we want you to serve your students effectively.
In this CCCREEC podcast, we have a conversation with Saddleback College real estate faculty Martin Welc and Brock Schermerhorn, and Terence Nelson, Veterans Program Coordinator at Saddleback College.
The conversation includes Terence Nelson, the Saddleback College Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) Program Coordinator and a Veterans Counselor. He developed the VETS Program in 2009 and has directed it since its inception yet in January 2016 he began the full time role coordinating the department and counseling in the faculty ranks. In addition, he co-authored the proposal for and serves as the principal investigator for the Pathways to Completion V-CAT Innovation Award from the CA Department of Finance of $2M articulating military occupations and courses into college and transfer coursework. Terence currently serves as the President of the Region 8 Veterans Program Directors Consortium covering 20 colleges from Mission Viejo to Glendora. He held the position of President for 6 years overall and is the Region VIII representative to the State Chancellors Office. Terence serves on the Southern California Army Advisory Council and has served on the Orange County Legislative Task Force. Recently, the VETS Team was awarded with one of the highest honors in the California Community College system, the 2016 Dr. John Rice Diversity and Equity Award. As a California Community College graduate, Terence has first-hand experience as to the opportunities our state's public higher education system offers and how lives can be changed through our state's community colleges.
