SB 1495 signed! - Impacts Real Estate Practice Course Content
Attention: Real Estate Faculty, Program Chairs, Administrators, and Program Coordinators
This notice relates to a newly mandated articulation review process by the Department of Real Estate (DRE) for Practice of Real Estate courses. Completion of this new process is required to maintain DRE approval for licensure requirements for certain real estate courses completed at California community colleges, which were impacted by the recently signed SB 1495.
Specifically, SB 1495 provides, beginning January 1, 2024, all applicants for the real estate salesperson or broker examination will need to complete a real estate practice course, which includes the following:
A component on implicit bias, including education about the impact of implicit bias, explicit bias, and systemic bias on consumers, the historical and social impacts of those biases, and actionable steps students can take to recognize and address their own implicit biases.
A component on federal and state fair housing laws and their application to the practice of real estate, which also includes an interactive participatory component where the student role-plays as both a consumer and a real estate professional.'
Please note that the necessary updates to the Course Outline of Record may include content, objectives, methods of instruction and evaluation, sample textbooks, and instructional materials. The DRE is currently work on an organized process for college real estate faculty, program administrators, or deans to certify that their real estate practice course meets requirements of SB 1495.
The sooner you can make these changes to your course content for Real Estate Practice, the least impact it will have on students!
